ARTIST STATEMENT

I love art which has an emotional impact, which invites the viewer to enter a painting's space and be rewarded for prolonged looking. Integral connections of music, meditations, and intuition are important to my process of making my experiences of nature and the natural world visual. Working in my studio,  artworks evolve over time with additions and subtractions of shapes and colors, as paintings gradually refine to essential patterns, forms, and color juxtapositions. Virtually every inch of each painting is worked and reworked, often multiple times, as layered colors and textures build. Texture is created through gestural brush strokes and scratching back into layers of paint or adding white tissue paper or other materials to the canvas and then layering paint over the material. There is a rhythm of color masses and brush strokes that may be discerned in the paintings reflecting musical favorites which include popular music as well as opera choruses and arias and other classical music.
